Outreach Ministry wants to share a secret that could be a joyful blessing to you. On the first and second Sunday of each month, a team of volunteers go the Maplewood Nursing Home during the Sunday school hour to share a devotional time and hymn sing along with some of the residents. You don’t have to be a gifted musician. You don’t have to be a preacher or a teacher. It is an opportunity for you to share a smile, hear a story from the past, and share the love of Jesus with some folks who are hungry for contact with others. If you are interested in becoming a part of this ministry call Donna Turner, 668-0617.

Sunday, September 19, 3:00 pm till dark join your church family at Pugh Bourne Park for our annual church picnic. Bring lawn chairs, blankets, sun screen, whatever you want to be comfortable. Parents, this is a good time for your children to bring their bikes, tricycles, skates, and scooters. There are tennis courts, a volleyball court, and plenty of open fields for football and baseball. Plan to eat dinner around 5:00 pm. The church will provide hamburgers, hotdogs, buns mayo, mustard, ketchup, and pickles. Please bring a side dish to share. Because there is limited access to water at the park, we can only provide beverages for dinner. Please bring water, soda or other drinks for your family for the afternoon. The picnic is one of the highlights of the year for all ages, so don’t miss this time of food, fellowship and recreation.

Area Relief Ministries (ARM), a non-profit organization that serves the low-income community here in Jackson, is sponsoring the 4th annual Goody 2 Shoes 5K fun run/walk on September 11, 2010, which will begin and end at the West TN Farmer’s Market in historic downtown Jackson. The purpose of this event is to raise money to buy tennis shoes for pre-K and elementary school children in need. In these tough economic times, it has become increasingly difficult for some parents to provide just the basics, much less buy new shoes, for their constantly growing children. Over the last three years ARM has assisted many families by putting new tennis shoes on the feet of over 500 children. Last year the event was a big success as over 200 individuals participated in the walk/run. ARM would love for you to partner with us this year to make a difference in a child’s life by participating in this event. Early registration (by 9/1) is $20 (with T-shirt) or $15 (without T-shirt). After 9/1, registration is $17 and T shirts may be available to purchase during the event for $5.00. If you are interested, application forms are available on the Outreach Board in the Narthex

With the approach of fall and cooler weather (we hope) we would like to mention our knitting and crocheting group, the Prayer Shawl Ministry. We create prayer shawls which we then give to members of our congregation recommended by Pastor Daphne Moses. They go to those facing unusually long or difficult illnesses or other severe life crises. Most of us offer a silent prayer, as we take up the yarn to work. When the shawl has been assigned, we all pray together for the recipient before giving it to one of the pastors to deliver. Many who have received shawls have told us that they found them a comfort and a blessing. We share ideas, patterns and just enjoy good fellowship together. We meet in Room 119 on Tuesday mornings from 10:00a.m until 11:00 a.m. But anyone is welcome to stay later if she is involved in a complicated pattern or just wants to relax, talk and knit/crochet a little while longer. This year, we will be opening the meetings with a devotional moment. If you don’t knit or crochet, but want to learn, someone more experienced will be glad to help you. If you are interested, we would welcome your participation. Bring needles, or hooks and yarn if you have something to work on. Or just come to observe the first time. For more information, call Amelia Morton at 731-343-5441.
